A constituent has pleaded guilty to mounting an antisemitic verbal attack against Labour MP and shadow communities secretary Jon Trickett.

On 23 January 2015, Darren Mark Lumb, 47, stopped the the MP for Hemsworth in West Yorkshire in the street and launched into an antisemitic tirade against him.

During the trial on Thursday at Leeds crown court, Lumb changed his plea to guilty to one count of religiously aggravated harassment and stalking with fear of violence, and one count of breaching an asbo.

umb – who has been known to Trickett’s office for a decade – was released on bail on the condition that he did not approach the MP or any member of his staff and he will return to court on 3 March for sentencing.

Lumb has previously had links to the British National Party (BNP), the English Defence League (EDL) and the National Front, and served as BNP organiser for Wakefield and later West Yorkshire.

He has previous convictions for assault and disorder and was convicted in 2011 of using racially aggravated threatening or insulting words and behaviour after he reportedly called a petrol station worker “a black bastard”.

Lumb, who lives in South Elmsall, stood as a BNP candidate for South Elmsall and South Kirkby in the Wakefield Metropolitan district council election in 2011, where he won 441 votes, 2.6% below the Conservative candidate.

A friend of Trickett’s said the MP had been left shocked and shaken by the incident and that “he hasn’t experienced rage like it in his life”.

Jon Trickett has been MP for Hemsworth since 1996. He served as the parliamentary private secretary to prime minister Gordon Brown from 2008 to 2010 and was then promoted to the shadow cabinet by Ed Miliband in 2011.

Trickett was one of 36 MPs to nominate Jeremy Corbyn in the Labour leadership election and was made shadow secretary of state for communities and local government in the shadow cabinet reshuffle following Corbyn’s landslide victory in September 2015.

THREE grandparents have been jailed for attacking a couple outside a pub – because they thought the male victim was Polish.

Paul Clarke, Sean Pickerill and Judith Pickerill – all in their forties – took part in the assault on Slovakian Milan Panacek and his English girlfriend Genevieve Barnett during a night out in Newcastle.

Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard tension had sparked between the male defendants and Mr Panacek because of the design of T-shirts they were wearing.

Sean Pickerill’s top bore the logo ‘Blood and Honour – England’, while Clarke’s had the brand ‘One True Saxon’.

Mr Panacek’s shirt had a quote in Spanish relating to the country’s civil war.

Following a disagreement on the dancefloor of The Rigger pub, Mr Panacek and Miss Barnett went outside where they were attacked by a group of around eight people, which included the defendants.

Prosecutor Elizabeth Power said: “They were shouting racial abuse about Mr Panacek being Polish.

“He tried to tell them he wasn’t Polish.

“Judith Pickerill punched Miss Barnett and scratched her to the face.

She pulled her backwards, pulling at her hair extensions.

“She fell to the floor and hit her head on the pavement.

“Her extensions were pulled out at the roots and blood was coming from her head.”

Judith Pickerill, aged 45, of St Bernard’s Road, Newcastle, went on to assault the pub’s manager Robert Birchill.

Father-of-three Sean Pickerill, aged 46, and Clarke were attacking Mr Panacek.

Police arrived to find the group which included the defendants making Nazi salutes and shouting: “Go back to your own country.”

Miss Power said witnesses described the group as ‘like a pack of animals’.

The court heard Miss Barnett suffered injuries including concussion and whiplash, and suffered blackouts after the incident.

Mr Panacek, who has lived in the UK for six years, had a fractured nose.

All three defendants pleaded guilty to racially aggravated assault occasioning actually bodily harm. Judith Pickerill also admitted common assault.

The court heard they all had previous convictions but had not been in trouble for a number of years.

Marc Davies, representing Judith Pickerill and 47-year-old Clarke, also of St Bernard’s Road, said: “They are ashamed and very sorry.

“These are two people that had been out of trouble for a long time, addressed any issues with drugs and settled down with families and full time employment.

“They are active and involved grandparents.”

Paul Cliff, representing Sean Pickerill, of St Giles Road, Knutton – who also has a grandchild – said: “He works in the construction industry alongside people from all over the world including Eastern Europeans and there have been no problems.”

Judge David Fletcher sentenced each defendant to 12 months in prison. He told them: “This was an ugly, appalling incident. Your racial comments, in the hearing of numerous people, were completely ignorant. You are three people in your mid-forties. That makes this offence even more shocking.”

A THUG who targeted two strangers in a racist attack in Orford leaving one of the victims unconscious and in desperate need of hospital treatment is now behind bars.

Ryan Swindells, aged 20, of East Avenue, Orford, was handed a three year sentence after pleading guilty to a section 20 assault and affray.

The court heard how two men of Iraqi-Kurd origin were walking along Orford Lane on April 4 at 6.40pm when they heard shouting and swearing from a group of men on the other side of the road.

One of the men – later identified as Swindells – could be heard shouting racist abuse and crossed the road to approach the two men.

Prosecuting Paulinus Barnes said: “One of the victims thought if he was nice to him he would walk away but the other males were encouraging him.

“He then put his head towards one of the victims in a threatening manner.”

A fight broke out with at least four others getting involved in the street brawl.

At one point CCTV showed three men kicking one of the victims while on the floor.

One of the victims later lost consciousness and had to be put in the recovery position by a member of the public – his face covered in blood from the attack.

The victim was taken to Aintree Hospital where he was treated for head injuries and a fractured collar bone.

Defending Swindells, David James said both the defendant, who has struggled with binge drinking and a cocaine habit, and the victims were ‘giving as good as they can get’ during the fight.

He added: “Having spoken to this young man this is not a man who is proud of his actions.

“He is embarrassed by them and he is disappointed he is in court again.

“He is deeply ashamed he has used racist terms as he does not feel he is an ingrained racist.”

Swindells has a number of previous convictions – one racially aggravated.

Declan Jenks, aged 21, of Alder Lane, and Joshua Williamson, aged 21, of Marsh House Lane, were also sentenced at Warrington Crown Court on Friday for their involvement in the brawl.

Jenks was sentenced to two and a half years in prison after admitting a section 20 assault, affray and breach of a suspended sentence.

Williamson pleaded guilty to affray and must carry out 160 hours of unpaid work, 35 days of rehabilitation activity and a thinking skills programme.

The court heard how Jenks, who has a previous convictions for drunk and disorderly and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, originally became involved in the fight to break it up.

Defending Jenks, John Banasko, said: “Unfortunately initially he had good intentions effectively to assist Mr Swindells as he was originally in the minority but he did become involved and he did throw punches.”

He added that he was not involved in the racist abuse and did not kick the victims.

Williamson, who has a previous conviction for a public order offence in 2014, did not throw any punches and was not involved in the racist abuse but chased one of the victims up the street.

Defending Williamson, Michael Whitty said apart from one previous conviction, the defendant’s behaviour was ‘out of character’.

He said: “He is a young man and he clearly has ideas about what he wants to do during his life.

“When it is the right time he wants to join the marines. He has ideas for his life that does not involve coming back to court.”

Sentencing, Judge Nicholas Woodward said this would have been a ‘disturbing incident’ for members of the public to witness.

He added: “It started with Swindells making racist comment towards them for no apparent reason.

“Not content with that you [Swindells] then came over from the opposite side of the road towards them and they were trying to diffuse the situation but you were clearly looking for a fight.

“In a macho way you put your head towards his showing aggression.

“When they did not respond you started to punch out.”

THE MUM of Lee Swindells was forced to apologise to a judge after lashing out as her son was led down to the cells.

Judge Nicholas Woodward ordered for Lynn Swindells to be detained by a police officer after she refused to be silent during the sentencing of her son.

While Ms Swindells could have faced proceedings under the Contempt of Court Act following her verbal outburst the judge decided only to issue her with a warning after she apologised for her actions.

Ms Swindells could be seen crying in the dock after spending part of the afternoon in the cells while she waited to find out her fate.

Sittingbourne man Darren White chased and beaten with plank after argument with Asian men

A Sittingbourne man who was beaten with a plank by two Asian men was himself hauled before the courts for racially aggravated assault.

Darren White posted footage on his Twitter account of the pair attacking him with a wooden plank as he fled through the town’s high street.

The 32-year-old then tweeted the former English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson, alerting him to the case.

“I got beat with wood and pole and I may be going prison for racial aggravated behaviour,” he posted.

The video shows White being chased past the New Century Cinema before being struck four times with the plank as he entered the high street.

White, of Doubleday Drive, Bapchild, went on to tweet “got court today as I said arrest the ****ing Muslims so up for section 5 (sic)”.

Tommy Robinson responded to the post, saying: “It’s a joke, that Muslim that hit you with the wood, has he been arrested?”

He was ordered to pay £1,925 in fines for assaulting the policemen and another £300 for having the drug.

However, White was found not guilty of racially aggravated behaviour.

The Asian men shown in the video initially denied any wrongdoing.

But Muhammad Ahad, 24, of Kingston Road, Epsom, and Sarwar Hussain, 25, of Palmerston Road, Chatham, changed their pleas to guilty in court and will be sentenced later this month.

A thug who threw a bin and traffic cone at a Doncaster takeaway delivery driver’s car before he and two others set upon him in a ‘horrific attack’ has been jailed.

Kane Moffatt, aged 22, kicked the Mexborough man repeatedly in the horror assault, which he carried out alongside 20-year-old Philip Temperton and a 17-year-old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons.

The violent trio admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm at Sheffield Crown Court. Temperton was also jailed.

Just after midnight on October 4 last year, the 17-year-old chased the delivery driver’s vehicle down Mexborough High Street until it pulled up outside a fast food outlet.

The driver went inside the shop, but when he came out the three men punched him to the floor before Moffatt and Temperton kicked him repeatedly.

Another man, who had been in the shop, came outside to try to help the victim, but Moffat and the 17-year-old then began to attack him too. He escaped and ran back into the shop.

Moffatt then threw several items at the victim’s car, including a traffic cone and a bin, before the 17-year-old punched the car window.

The three then fled the scene, leaving the ‘distressed’ man on the floor.

They were arrested in November 2014 and entered not guilty pleas on their first court appearance in January.

But they changed their pleas to guilty and were sentenced on Friday.

Moffatt and the 17-year-old had also admitted common assault.

Moffatt, of Hawthorne Crescent, Mexborough, was sentenced to 16 months in prison and Temperton, of Arnold Crescent, Mexborough, was jailed for ten months.

The 17-year-old Doncaster boy was given a 12-month youth rehabilitation order.

Investigating officer Det Con Della O’Horo said after the court hearing: “This was a horrific attack on a man, and his friend who tried to help, for no reason whatsoever.

“The actions of these three that night are absolutely deplorable.

“Fortunately, the two victims did not sustain any serious injuries as a result of this violent assault, however the delivery driver has been extremely distressed by the incident.

“I hope residents in Mexborough feel some form of reassurance that we will not tolerate any form of criminality or violence and will do all that we can to bring offenders in the town to justice.”

A man who broke his cousin’s nose by head-butting him at a family party has been jailed for 14 months.

Gerald McCullion, 33, of St Helier’s Road, South Shore, Blackpool, was also accused of biting off a large chunk of an uncle’s ear at the same party but was cleared at an earlier hearing.

McCullion’s cousin was celebrating his 21st birthday party at an address on Duke Street, Blackpool, last December when violence flared.

Not only was his cousin left with a broken nose, McCullion also assaulted another man by barging into him as he stormed out.

The defendant admitted offences of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and also common assault.

A sentencing hearing at Preston Crown Court heard how he had been estranged from members of his family, but went along to the birthday party after it carried on from a pub.

When a row broke out between him and a relative, his cousin tried to act as a peacemaker but was attacked.

Rachel Woods, defending, told the hearing McCullion believed others had been acting aggressively towards him.

He claimed he had resorted to head-butting his cousin in order to get away from him.

But jailing him for 14 months, Judge Robert Altham told him he had effectively used his head as a weapon.

He said: “His intention was to try and persuade you the rest of the family had not set their face against you.

“He was trying to make peace between you and the rest of the family.

“Maybe he took hold of you, but your response was wholly unacceptable.”

Several weeks ago, McCullion was cleared of attacking his uncle by biting off part of his ear and causing a fractured jaw.

He told a jury he had not been involved and claimed he could not have done it because he was missing his upper front teeth.

A neo-Nazi has been jailed for five years for attacking an Asian man on the day of Fusilier Lee Rigby’s funeral.

Richard Harris, 38, who has Swastika tattoos, smashed a bottle over Zahoor Hussain’s head at the Mornington Lodge in Blackwood in July 2013.

Newport Crown Court heard he got angry after spotting his victim talking to an “attractive white woman” colleague.

Harris, of Blackwood, was found guilty of racially aggravated wounding.

Harris, who said he was a member of a fascist “white pride” movement and had pictures of Hitler in his living room, shouted at the woman: “What are you doing drinking with terrorists?”

He then told the British Asian Mr Hussain: “You are all animals. This is not your country”.

‘Dangerous extremist’

Harris then smashed a full beer bottle over Mr Hussain’s head knocking him unconscious and leaving his left ear nearly severed from his scalp.

Harris told his trial “Hitler’s views are common sense on a lot of things” and claimed there “needs to be more research done” into whether the Holocaust took place.

He was found guilty of the attack, which left his victim with hearing problems and severe lacerations to his left ear and neck.

Sentencing him, Judge Jonathan Ferris said was a “dangerous extremist who is capable of extreme violence”.

Speaking after the case, Supt Mark Warrender, who is in charge of hate crime at Gwent Police, said the attack was a “disgusting assault” which had life-changing effects for the victim.

“The majority of people find his behaviour, which was fuelled by racism, abhorrent. There is no place for racism or any hate crime within our communities,” he said.

Michael Howarth was sentenced on 20 May 2015 at Thanet Magistrates’ Court.

He pleaded guilty to racially aggravated assault and racially aggravated threatening behaviour.

On 12 December 2014 the 55-year-old, of Crabble Lane, Dover, assaulted a man in High Street, Dover, and the assault was racially aggravated.

The same day he used threatening or abusive words or behaviour within the hearing or sight of someone likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress and the offence was racially aggravated.

Magistrates ordered Howarth to carry out 220 hours of unpaid work within the next 12 months and pay £250 in compensation, £150 costs and a £60 victim surcharge

HE was once jailed after holding his daughter captive – but 15 years on he’s back in trouble with the law, this time for protecting her honour.

Mark Pearson was locked up for eight years in 1996 after he sparked a two-hour armed siege, which left a police officer fighting for his life.

Armed with a commando knife, Pearson, then 21, stabbed PC Peter Walsh in the thigh, severing a main vein, then returned to his house and kept his partner and three-year-old daughter captive while armed police surrounded his property.

The horrifying ordeal only ended after police negotiators and his mother pleaded with him to give himself up.

But after pledging to turn his life around while in prison, Pearson has been hauled before the court once again – this time for assaulting a teenager who bad-mouthed his daughter, now 18, to his face.

The court heard Tina’s 18-year-old ex Robert Cummings told Pearson he would spread lies about his daughter around the village where they live. Pearson, 36, then pushed Mr Cummings to the ground and punched him in the face.

Speaking from his home in Pelton, County Durham, Pearson said: “Obviously, the biggest regret of my life was that incident where Tina was involved as a child.

“As her dad, I see it as my job to protect her, and that’s what I did when this kid insulted her like he did.”

Pearson, who lives with his partner and five children in The Avenue, admitted assault before Consett magistrates yesterday.

He also admitted possessing three air rifles which were found by police when they raided his home following the attack.

The court heard Pearson spotted Tina and Mr Cummings outside a supermarket cuddling in June.

He approached the pair and told Tina to return home.

Heather Wilkinson, prosecuting, said: “He told her to go home and for Robert Cummings to wait outside the property.

“Shouting could be heard from inside the property. Mr Cummings left and walked to a bus stop when a neighbour approached him.

“Pearson then came out and tried to start an argument.

“Mr Cummings said ‘I felt he wanted to have a fight’. He (Pearson) said: ‘Come home get a shovel and you can dig yourself a hole’.”

It was said that Pearson then pushed the teenager towards the ground over a bench and, as he turned to board a bus, hit him in the face.

But Susan Hanson, defending, said that while Pearson admitted causing the injuries, he did not accept many of the details of what happened.

He was sentenced to a 12-month community order with supervision and ordered to attend a calm course.

He was also ordered to pay compensation to Mr Cummings of £100.

A harrowing 999 call captured the moments a terrified woman desperately begged for help while hiding from her attacker.

A hushed courtroom heard part of the 12-minute recording in which the petrified victim pleaded in panicked whispers: “Hurry up. Hurry up. Please please please.”

She sought refuge in a bathroom as her raging assailant Scott Weedall pounded on the door, armed with a baseball bat, bellowing: “Open the door.”

She was so scared she could not remember where she was or who had just been punching her.

A Teesside Crown Court judge said today it was one of the worst assault cases he had ever had to deal with.

Weedall, 40, repaid the woman’s kindness with violence after she took a taxi to his home on South Avenue, Billingham in the early hours of February 25.

She was concerned for him after he posted a Facebook message saying he was going to “end it”.

She saw him swigging vodka from the bottle after he had drunk 26 cans of lager and cider, the court was told.

After some “banter”, he exposed himself to her but she resisted his advances.

She got into bed with him but turned him down again when he tried to kiss and cuddle her.

He “exploded” and pushed her off the bed, trapping her between it and the wall, said prosecutor David Crook.

He hit her, delivering powerful, forceful blows to her head and face as she shouted: “Please stop.”

She did not remember how she got away, but locked herself in the bathroom and called 999.

She was so scared during the call it took her nine minutes to remember Weedall’s name.

She stalled Weedall as he banged on the door repeatedly shouting: “Open the door now. Open the door.”

Weedall bowed his head in the dock as he listened to the distressing call, apparently for the first time.

The call handler tried to get more information and reassure her while tracing her phone.

Weedall walked away from the bathroom door during the 999 call and had to be restrained when police arrived.

Officers had to convince the woman to open the door. She suffered a black eye, a cut lip, bruising and swelling to her face and head.

She later said in a statement: “This incident really shook me up.

“I’m so scared of what could have happened if Scott had got into the bathroom.

“It was like he had a split personality. He just flipped. He was so aggressive and is a big man. He’s almost twice the size of me.

“I’ve suffered violence in the past so this has brought it all back.

“I went to Simon’s in good faith to help him. I didn’t have to but I did. That’s what kind of person I am.”

Weedall admitted assault causing actual bodily harm. He had one old conviction for assault.

Peter Wishlade, defending, said: “He is utterly and totally ashamed of his totally reprehensible and undoubtedly dangerous behaviour.

“He’s not a persistent offender by any means. He’s not an assaulter of women in normal circumstances.”

He said Weedall still had little memory of the events.

He told how Weedall successfully tackled his alcohol problem and stopped drinking, but hit the bottle again when his wife had an affair and left with the children.

Weedall, who had character references, stayed sober since the assault because of his “shock, horror and amazement at what he had done”.

Judge Howard Crowson told Weedall: “A caring woman was trying to help you in a time of crisis.

“You attacked her having got her inside the house.

“You attacker her when she was vulnerable, when she was defenceless.

“You continued to try to attack her when she was locked in the bathroom, terrified. You were armed by this time with a baseball bat.”

He jailed Weedall for 21 months.
