Michael Coyle stood for election to Westminster as the BNP candidate in Glasgow South in 2010, and as a National Front MSP candidate for Linlithgow.

Former soldier Michael Coyle

A Far-Right thug who stood as a BNP and National Front candidate in two elections is facing a substantial prison sentence for violently raping a woman and attempting to rape her teenage daughter.

A jury heard particularly distressing evidence that former soldier Michael Coyle humiliated his 39-year-old victim by using a craft knife to carve the word “s***” into her thigh; “w****” into her arm; “old” and “saggy” on her breasts, and the letters “FAT” across her stomach.

Tattooed Coyle, 40, who also rubbed the woman’s face against a rough wall leaving a burn-like mark on her cheek, was further convicted of wilfully ill-treating her children by forcing them to stand in a cold dark room for hours and of assaulting two of her sons by presenting a knife at them and hitting one of them on the face.

He was due to be sentenced at the High Court in Livingston on Monday after earlier being remanded in custody for background reports. However, when he appeared via a videolink from Addiewell Prison, West Lothian, the court was told that no-one had got in touch to interview him for a criminal justice social work report.

Coyle’s defence counsel Mark Stewart QC said: “No responsibility for that falls on Mr Coyle. He’s not been contacted. He’s anxious for the matter to proceed as soon as possible.”

Mr Stewart tendered two letters to the court in mitigation and said a new date for sentencing had been identified as 6 September at Edinburgh High Court.

Judge Alison Stirling, who earlier described the violent and controlling abuser’s case as “complex and harrowing”, adjourned the case until then.

She said: “It’s unfortunate the criminal justice social work report is not available. It was through no fault of Mr Coyle and, as far as I’m aware, it’s not the fault of the court either.

“I hope we can have that chased up and the report will be available when he appears in front of me again on 6 September in Edinburgh.”

Giving evidence against Coyle at his trial the mum-of-five told how he didn’t allow her to go out or see friends.

She said she was “on a stopwatch” any time she left the house with violent consequences if she returned late.

She claimed he raped her after accusing her of cheating on him when she returned home late from a girls’ night out.

She said he sent messages from her Facebook account to a photographer who’d taken her picture in a rock pub saying: “Did I flirt with you? I can’t remember.” Then asking if the stranger was interested in her.

Then, she said, as she was lying on the couch he started hitting her in the face with his manhood.

She told the court: “He was saying things like ‘This is what you want isn’t it, you little s***? This is what you wanted all night.’

“He kicked me in the stomach and then he told me to get back through to bed. I thought ‘That’s over’, but it wasn’t over.”

She went on: “He pushed me backwards onto the couch. He started doing that thing with his penis again saying that’s what I wanted and I was going to get it – I was going to get my wish.

“He started pushing my legs apart with his knees and I screamed but he just covered my mouth. I was on my back on the couch and he was pushing his forearm down into my face.

“He put himself inside me and he didn’t stop until he was finished. I couldn’t fight back.”

She said she once tried to flee from the house half naked but he rugby tackled her to the floor shattering her teeth so badly she lost four on one side of her mouth and two on the other.

Her daughter, now aged 18, testified that the car bodyshop worker of Livingston, West Lothian, sexually assaulted her when she was around 12 or 13 years-old.

She told how she woke up and found him straddling her, naked from waist down, and attempting to insert his penis into her mouth.

Coyle, who has had his name added to the sex offenders’ register, stood for election to Westminster as the BNP candidate in Glasgow South in 2010 and fought as National Front candidate to become a Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Linlithgow constituency.

He failed on both counts.

ONLY days after leaving jail, a convicted rapist went on the rampage robbing and terrorising women staff in four Bolton shops.

Homeless Stuart Partington “terrorised and tormented” victims with a knife and a gun over six hours one day last November in Bolton town centre, a court was told.

Yesterday was his 33rd birthday and at Manchester Crown Court he was jailed for life with a recommendation he serves at least eight years.

Mr Justice Forbes told him: “You have shown no pity for your victims or remorse for these grave crimes.

“In one case you sexually attacked one of them – it was as bad a case of indecent assault as it is possible to imagine.

“Words cannot express the true measure of the horror and degradation you inflicted upon your victim.”

Bolton-born Partington, of no settled address, admitted four robberies and the indecent assault. He also admitted twice indecently assaulting a man in a hostel where both were staying a few days before the robberies.

His counsel, Ian McDonald QC, said Partington had an untreatable personality disorder and was not mentally ill.

“He understands the seriousness of the offences, but has no insight into the terror and alarm he has caused,” said counsel. “It simply does not register.”

David Friesner, prosecuting, said Partington grabbed hold of assistants, threatening them with weapons and demanding cash.

In all, he got £340 from tills and handbags, a gold chain and personal jewellery. It included one woman’s wedding and engagement rings, which he sold.

Some victims feared they would be raped. They were dragged round the shops and a gun was put in their mouths. The knife was also held against throats.

In the sex attack, he cut through the woman’s jumper and ‘T’ shirt, fondled her breasts and removed other clothing.

He touched her private parts with the knife, dragged her upstairs and indecently assaulted her again. The ordeal lasted 45 minutes before he left. Partington bought an airgun and pellets before the last two robberies.

The court heard he was freed less than a month earlier from a seven year term imposed in May, 1991, for raping a woman.

Partington was given a life sentences for the robberies. He was given concurrent terms of eight years for the attack on the woman and four years for the indecent assaults on the man.

A judge said John Dunbar’s ‘shameful performance’ at Liverpool One had no place in our city

A racist rapist was told he doesn’t belong in Liverpool after he hurled “vile abuse” at Christmas shoppers.

John Dunbar, aka Stuart Partington, was filmed in Liverpool One launching a tirade of abuse at three Asian men last December.

The 57-year-old was captured on film hurling insults such as “c***s” and “horrible b******s” at passers-by.

Dunbar initially followed two Asian men while telling people to “f*** off” and saying he was Muslim.

After he was challenged by onlookers he told people he had been released from a 26 year prison sentence.

On Friday, a judge at Liverpool Crown Court blasted Dunbar’s behaviour, telling him there is “no place” for racism in Liverpool, which she described as a “welcoming and inclusive city”.

Judge Louis Brandon, sentencing, said: “Liverpool is a welcoming and inclusive city.

“That was demonstrated by the way that those who had the misfortune to deal with you on that day sought to protect each other.

“There is no place in this city for behaviour like that or people like you who hold such offensive views and prowl the streets.

“The public need protecting from you.”

Fiona McNeill, prosecuting, explained that the incident took place on December 2 at around 5pm when Dunbar “approached two Asian males” while “acting in an aggressive manner”.

Ms McNeill told the court that Dunbar followed the two men while shouting at them.

She said: “He was seen approaching two males, telling people to f*** off and said he was Muslim.”

Ms McNeill said he had asked one of the men “if he had cut to his hand” as he waved his bloodied arm in the air.

She added: “He seemed to be accusing the man for the injury to his hand” and is “heard to tell them to stop ganging up on him”.

Footage of the incident was played in the court, and in the video Dunbar shouts at a third man: “I’m not a f***ing radical alright”, adding: “You want to f*** with me bro? I’ve just done 26 years in prison, you mother f***er.

“You wanna f*** with me? I’ll bring the f***ing rain, the f***ing dogs down on you mother f***ers. Now f*** off.”

In the horrific abuse he calls onlookers “c***s” and “horrible b******s” while yelling “that’s right, keep walking”.

Dunbar then continues, and even says: “This is my country, don’t f***ing invade my country with your f***ing s***.”

Gesturing to a cut on his hand Dunbar says “E-N-G-L-I-S-H, English, see that? That’s f***ing English blood”.

In the video Dunbar continues to abuse members of the public and approached Lila Tamea, who filmed the ordeal, and said she had “no words” for the racism.

Ms Tamea was protected by other members of the public who intervened.

He also approaches someone off camera, while a woman can be heard saying “stop being a racist” and shouts: “Let’s go you Muslim c***.”

Footage from the body worn camera on a police officer shows an officer asking about the cut on his hand and offering to take Dunbar to the hospital, which he declines.

When asked what had happened Dunbar replied “I haven’t a clue” and admitted to the officer he had had a drink.

He then becomes agitated saying “I don’t need police, I’m not causing trouble” before the officers arrested him outside WHSmith for a public order offence.

A witness can be heard telling the officer “There’s been about three or four Asian guys, he has thrown racist abuse, I think he has called one a foreign b*****d”.

When arrested Dunbar was silent and refused to provide his name, but then his outburst continues as he shouts: “F*** you mate, f*** you right listening to them.

“So you’re saying I’m being racist what’s racist?”

Dunbar then resists arrests and continues to struggle before officers apply leg restraints and a spit hood and find a razorblade.

He was later charged with assaulting an emergency worker after he headbutted one of the police officers.

Dunbar has 26 previous convictions for 60 offences.

The court heard that in 1991 Dunbar was jailed for rape and a breach of a suspended sentence.

Ms McNeill explained that in 1995 was jailed for life with a recommendation of at least eight years in prison after robbing and terrorising female staff in four shops with a knife and imitation gun.

In his rampage a judge said he “terrorised and tormented” his victims over six hours in Bolton town centre.

Mr Justice Forbes told Dunbar: “You have shown no pity for your victims or remorse for these grave crimes.

“In one case you sexually attacked one of them – it was as bad a case of indecent assault as it is possible to imagine.

“Words cannot express the true measure of the horror and degradation you inflicted upon your victim.”

Dunbar had entered one Bolton store where he produced a handgun and tied up one 40-year-old female victim before doing the same in a second shop.

Dunbar went to a third shop, producing the knife and a handgun and made off with cash before going on to rob the fourth store, where he was “striking the victim several times with a gun causing wounds to her head”.

John Dunbar, aka Stuart Partington, 57

David Lister, defending, said: “The greatest mitigation is his guilty plea. He didn’t plead guilty at his earliest plea trial and preparation hearing, it wasn’t long after he entered his guilty pleas.

“I have had a conference with him before the hearing, he does wish for me to express his apologies and regret for the clear distress he caused to the members of the public who had to witness his frankly appalling behaviour.

“He is remorseful for that behaviour. It is clear Dunbar didn’t cope well in his release from custody.”

Mr Lister explained Dunbar had been serving a 26 year sentence and had been released for six weeks before his rampage.

Mr Listed said Dunbar “wasn’t in receipt of the support he evidently needed”.

Dunbar, of Great Howard Street, Liverpool city centre, admitted two counts of using threatening or abusive words or behaviour, and one count of resisting or obstructing a constable, possession of a bladed article and racially aggravated harassment.

Judge Brandon, summarising the offences, said: “You caused yourself an injury with a blade you were carrying at a busy shopping centre in December when the area was full of families.

“You embarked upon a racist rampage, hurling vile abuse at two young men.”

Judge Brandon said Dunbar then “turned on another member of the public” as he abused other innocent bystanders.

“Nobody should have to put up with that shameful behaviour.”

The judge added: “There were children present, it is obvious from that footage there were a lot of people present in that area Christmas shopping.”

Judge Brandon, referring to the racially aggravated offences, said: “It’s hard to envisage a more serious offence of its type, you continually made racist comments.”

The judge ruled that “serious alarm or distress was caused when you waved around your bloody arm”.

Judge Brandon said: “It is clear from the footage you were embarking on a shameful performance.”

After commenting that he had been under the influence of alcohol at the time the judge said: “I have considered all that has been said on your behalf.”

Judge Brandon noted that Dunbar had mental health difficulties but said: “It has not been suggested any of your difficulties affect your culpability and I do not find that they do.”

“In reality there is little that can be said to mitigate these offences save your guilty pleas.”

Referring to Dunbar’s previous offences Judge Brandon said: “You have made a career out of serious criminal offending.”

Dunbar was jailed for three years.

Twisted pervert Gerard Kendrick, who had a nappy fetish, raped and molested six children over two decades

Gerard Kendrick, 32, of Barmouth Way, Vauxhall

Gerard Kendrick, 32, of Barmouth Way, Vauxhall

A serial rapist with a nappy fetish was caught after taking horrific photos of a victim and sending them to another paedophile.

Gerard Kendrick raped and molested six children over two decades – beginning when he himself was aged just 10-years-old.

The twisted pervert, 32, forced little boys and girls to wear nappies while carrying out sickening attacks on traumatised victims.

But his disturbing crimes only came to light last year, after police seized indecent images from a known sex offender in Blackburn.

Using GPS technology, officers discovered some of the photographs were created at Kendrick’s Barmouth Way, Vauxhall home.

They later found the stash included pictures Kendrick took of him raping a little boy, who he made wear a nappy, in 2017 and 2018.

When he was arrested over the find last year, five more victims – now adults – came forward to report he had also ruined their lives.

Kendrick was today jailed for 18 years, with an extended six years on licence, for the “disgraceful catalogue of sexual offending”.

Judge Robert Warnock said: “You have stolen the innocence and enjoyment of their childhood and scarred and impaired their adult life.”

Liverpool Crown Court heard police recovered hundreds of indecent images from the computer of convicted paedophile Trevor Howard.

The 60-year-old, of no fixed address but formerly of Whalley Old Road, Blackburn, was jailed for 18 months in November last year.

Arthur Gibson, prosecuting, said: “As part of the development of investigatory techniques in relation to the production and distribution of indecent images of children, the police are now able to subject recovered images to a programme, which is capable of revealing a GPS location, and date and time when a particular image was created.”

How he was caught

The innovative software identified that images had been sent from GPS locations in Liverpool, including Stanley Dock and Kendrick’s nearby home.

Merseyside Police examined his Facebook account, which led them to contact a couple, whose child they believed had been abused and pictured.
They visited the pair, who confirmed it was their child and said they recognised Kendrick’s bathroom in one picture, which led to his house being raided.

Share a ‘nappy fetish’

Kendrick arrived home mid-search and claimed: “I may have took one or two photos when he was in a nappy, but I didn’t know it was wrong.

“I know my computer was hacked and I had to wipe it clean.”

Mr Gibson said: “The relevance of the nappy is that Howard and the defendant share an interest in a nappy fetish, and a large number of the indecent images involved children in nappies.”

They recovered 3,416 indecent images, including 668 Category A pictures – the most serious category – from Kendrick’s computer.

Mr Gibson said Kendrick, who also had revolting extreme porn, must have distributed the pictures of the boy directly or indirectly to Howard via a third party of sharing site.

The court heard his five other victims were aged between six and 12 when Kendrick, then aged between 10 and 21, abused them in the 1990s and 2000s.

One boy recalled how Kendrick had once been violent, dragged him around and thrown him against a bed, before raping him.

A girl said he pushed her onto a bed, held her arms and covered her mouth when molesting her, hit and threatened her, and repeatedly attempted to rape her.

Mr Gibson said: “On occasions the defendant’s nappy fetish came to the fore – he would make her wear a nappy and walk around the room.”

A second girl told police he asked her to play the game of “being the baby”, made her lie on a bed, undressed and abused her.

Kendrick molested a third girl while another boy was present, making the boy face the wall, before he abused the boy while she faced the wall.

Tears in court

He admitted 16 sexual offences including rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, indecent assault, and making and distributing indecent photos of children.

Victims and their supporters sitting in the public gallery cried as the abuse was described, with one upset man leaving the courtroom.

Some observers snorted in derision when it was said Kendrick – sitting stone-faced and staring straight ahead – claimed to be sorry.

Michael O’Brien, defending, said: “The defendant understands that there is very little that can be said on his behalf.

“He maintains the account that he gave to the author of the pre-sentence report, namely that he is disgusted by what he’s done, and maintains his desire to apologise to his victims for the harm and distress, and take advantage of any treatment programmes that may be offered to him.”

Judge Warnock said Kendrick’s “sexual abuse and degradation” of his victims represented “a disgraceful catalogue of sexual offending”.

He said: “You sexually abused your victims and downloaded indecent images entirely for your own selfish and sexual enjoyment.

“You did not have any consideration whatsoever for the welfare or innocence of these children.

“Unwilling” to address what he had done.

“It seems that you regarded them as objects available to satiate your own fetishes and perversions.”

A psychologist found Kendrick – who claimed he too was a victim of sexual abuse – was “unwilling and unable” to address what he had done.

The doctor concluded he was “an active participant in a sexual fetish”, while a probation officer found he had “little or no insight” into his crimes.

“Dangerous offender”

Judge Warnock said: “I am unsure as to the genuineness of the remorse expressed.”

He said Kendrick was a high risk of sexual harm to children and a “dangerous offender”, who must sign on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

This type of extended sentence means the paedophile will spend at least two thirds of the custodial term – 12 years – behind bars.

He will only be freed before the end of the 18 years if a parole board decides it is safe and will be on licence until he is 56.

Speaking after the hearing, Detective Sergeant Richie Shillito, who investigated the incident, said: “Gerard Kendrick subjected his six victims to vicious and violent sexual assaults for his own sexual gratification.

“I would like to praise the bravery and courage of the victims for the strength they have shown in speaking to us about the ordeal they were put through by Kendrick.

Victims praised

“Their support of our investigation has led to a dangerous sexual predator being sent to jail for a long period of time, and to other children being protected from him.

“The victims and their families were supported by specially trained officers from Merseyside Polices Unity Team during the course of the investigation and court process.

“Merseyside Police will always listen to victims of sexual violence, whether it is recent or not, and whatever the circumstances. We will treat all victims with sensitivity, compassion and as individuals with individual needs.

“There is a great deal of support and advice out there and we can put measures in place to help victims from the point they make a report to the police right through to the court hearing.

“I would urge anyone who has been sexually assaulted or raped to find it within themselves to tell someone what has happened to them so that they do not continue to suffer in silence.

The judge told Kendrick he had abused his victims for his "own selfish and sexual enjoyment"

The judge told Kendrick he had abused his victims for his “own selfish and sexual enjoyment”

A “dangerous predator” who raped two young boys and sexually abused four other children has been jailed for 18 years.

Gerard Kendrick, of Vauxhall, was sentenced to a further six years on licence after pleading guilty to 16 sex offences at Liverpool Crown Court.

The 32-year-old abused three boys and three girls, aged between six and 12, over two decades.

His first offence was committed when he was 10 years old.

Detectives were led to Kendrick when they found a large number of indecent images of children on the computer of a known sex offender in Lancashire.

They used technology to establish that the photos, which included images of one of the rape victims, had been taken at Kendrick’s home and distributed via the internet.

‘Fetishes and perversions’

The rape of a six-year-old boy took place in the last two years, the court heard.

Judge Robert Warnock told Kendrick he had abused his victims for his “own selfish and sexual enjoyment”.

“You did not have any consideration whatsoever for the welfare or innocence of those children. It seems that you regarded them as objects available to satiate your own fetishes and perversions,” he added.

Det Sgt Richie Shillito from Merseyside Police said: “Gerard Kendrick subjected his six victims to vicious and violent sexual assaults for his own sexual gratification.”

He praised the “bravery and courage” of the victims that “led to a dangerous sexual predator being sent to jail”.

Kendrick, who has no previous convictions, was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for life. He will have to serve 12 years before being able to apply for parole.

A Tommy Robinson supporter and convicted rapist has been jailed for 28 days for posting threatening and abusive comments about home secretary Sajid Javid.

Wayne Kirby, 49, was handed the sentence after leaving remarks on Mr Javid’s Facebook page last summer.

The Northolt man called for the Tory politician to be “hung, drawn and quartered” if anything happened to the infamous far-right activist. He also called Mr Javid “a Muslim terrorist”.

He ended his post by saying Mr Javid should “legally get ready to die boy”.

Kirby served six years after being convicted for rape in 2007, Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard.

Officers from London’s Metropolitan Police discovered the post had been sent from a phone and Facebook profile linked to Kirby after the home secretary’s office reported the threat.

The Tommy Robinson supporter was also found guilty of possession of cannabis, which breached his conditional discharge of a previous class B conviction.

Sentencing chief magistrate Emma Arbuthnot said: “The use of the word ‘boy’ was to humiliate the politician and there was clear racial and religious undertones.

“It was deliberate and hostile and this is something I take very seriously. Why should politicians and their staff work in this threatening environment? You say you didn’t mean it, it was out of character and it was idle but the trouble is that some people do put this into effect, as we have seen in the past.

“You are a loner and have no relationships and I accept it was sent on the spur of the moment.”

Kirby, who said he had been due to start a new job cleaning out wheelie bins, was fined £250 in relation to the possession of cannabis and also ordered to pay £150 in costs.

Detective Inspector Phil Grindell, from Scotland Yard’s parliamentary liaison team said: “As this investigation shows, we take all reports of crimes from MPs very seriously and we will deal robustly with incidents of harassment and abuse that are brought to our attention.

“It is not right that anyone is harassed, intimidated or obstructed because of their job, and we will fully investigate any reports of crimes against MPs or their staff and look to bring those responsible to justice.”

Kirby pleaded guilty to rape after 14 years.

Kirby pleaded guilty to rape after 14 years.

A RAPIST has been jailed for six years for a attack on a woman 14 years ago, after he was identified through advances in forensic technology.

Wayne Kirby, 37, of Dabbs Hill, Northholt, was arrested in October 2007 after being identified through DNA samples taken at the time of the attack.

Kirby pleaded guilty to rape on October 31 at Southwark Crown Court, and was sentenced yesterday to six years in prison.

He will also have to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life.

On May 18, 1993, the day of the attack, Kirby climbed through the window of his victim’s ground-floor hostel room in Dove House Court, Kittiwake Road, Notholt.

The victim, who was at home looking after her sick baby, had left the window open to let in some air when she went to bed, just before midnight.

She woke up a little later, fearing there was someone in her room.

Kirby then attacked and raped her, as her six-month-old baby slept in bed next to them.

Police arrested four suspects at the time, but their DNA profiles did not match any on the National DNA Database, and they were released.

DC Lana Kettel, who led the investigation for Greenwood Police, said: “I hope this case will give other potential victims the strength to come forward and report previously unreported offences to police.

“I’d like to reassure the community that the police will prosecute offenders for offences that have remained undetected for a number of years.”

In 2002 the Sapphire Cold Case Investigation Team was set up to investigate all unsolved rape allegations reported to the Met.

From 2007

A Tommy Robinson supporter branded the Home Secretary a “Muslim terrorist” and threatened to have him “hung, drawn and quarter” if anything happened to the far right leader, a court heard.

Wayne Kirby, 49, posted the comment on Sajid Javid’s Facebook page last summer threatening to kill him by the medieval death penalty technique.

The Facebook post was read out in court which stated: “You Muslim terrorist.

“If anything happens to Tommy Robinson you will die right after.

“You will be hung, drawn and quartered by the real British people under the constitution of the Magna Carta.

“Get ready to die.”

The far right supporter’s threat was picked up by the home secretary’s office manager Sophie Bolsover who reported it to the police who then raided his home in Northolt, West London.

Wearing jeans and a green jacket, Kirby appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today (Mon) for sentencing.

He previously pleaded guilty to sending the racially fuelled threat to the Home Secretary on June 14 last year.

Defending, Mr Jonah Walker-Smith said Kirby’s threat was “silly and ignorant.”

He said: “Referencing to being hung, drawn and quartered under the constitution of the Magna Carta shows his ignorance and that it was a fantasy.

“It was idle and spur of the moment rather than premeditated.

“I’d think the Home Secretary is sufficiently robust.

“It was a silly comment during a moment of anger and he does show remorse.”

But Chief Magistrate, Emma Arbuthnot refuted this and said: “Why should politicians put up with this type of abuse?

“He might deny being a far right advocate but he obviously has extreme views.”

Kirby of Northolt, West London, was arrested on September 25 on suspicion of “sending an electronic communication namely a Facebook post which conveyed a threat for the purpose of causing distress or anxiety to the recipient.”

Kirby will be sentenced later.

A Littlehampton man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison over a series of child sex offences in Crawley.

Police said that at Lewes Crown Court, on February 16, Peter Gillett, 59, of Arundel Road, was convicted of seven counts of non-recent sexual offences in Crawley, some involving multiple occasions, against two young girls and a young boy.

Sentencing awaited the outcome of a separate trial for Gillett for possession of a stun gun found at his address when he was arrested in 2016, police said.

They added he was convicted of that offence, too, and was given a 12-month sentence to run concurrently with the sex offence sentencing.

A court-imposed reporting restriction had prohibited publication of news of the sex offence sentences until the stun gun offence had been dealt with.

Police said Gillett will be a registered sex offender for life.

He was convicted of: two counts of rape, two of indecent assault, one of multiple offences of rape and indecent assault, one of causing actual bodily harm, against a girl; one count of gross indecency and a count of child cruelty against a boy and one count of indecent assault against a girl.

He was found not guilty of a count of rape and a count of indecent assault against the first girl and one count of indecent assault against the boy, police added.

The prosecution followed an investigation by detectives from the West Sussex Safeguarding Investigations Unit.

Detective Constable Rees Hopcraft said the offences came to light in 2016 when the two female victims, then adults, contacted police ‘after learning of online postings suggesting that Gillett had committed sexual offences against the boy’.

DC Hopcraft added: “We investigated and gradually uncovered a series of offences of sexual abuse by him against all three victims when they were young and vulnerable children, over a period of years.

“All three gave evidence against him and after a long trial, during which Gillett discharged his counsel and defended himself, the jury found him guilty of the sexual offences.

“We will always take seriously and follow up such reports, regardless of how long ago the events are said to have occurred.”

James Swindlehurst

James Swindlehurst

A ‘HORRIFIC’ South Yorkshire paedophile who raped two vulnerable young children after buying them sweets has been jailed for 20 years.

James Andrew Swindlehurst, 43, of Rockingham Street, Honeywell, Barnsley was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court after being found guilty of 13 non-recent counts of rape and indecent assault of a child.

Swindlehurst denied the offences against two victims that spanned a five-year period during the 1990s and 2000s.

He was found guilty by a jury following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court in October.

Detective Constable Elinor Duke, leading the investigation, said: “This man took advantage of the fact that the children were vulnerable.

“He gained their trust by building a friendship with them and making them feel ‘needed’.

“He would buy them sweets and take them out before carrying out a prolonged period of sexual abuse, telling them that there was no point telling anyone as nobody would believe them.”

The victims made a disclosure to police in April 2014 and Swindlehurst was arrested and a full investigation was carried out.

DC Duke added: “The bravery that the victims have shown in coming forward is exceptional.

“They did it with the motivation to prevent Swindlehurst hurting any other children.

“It is testament to the courage of the victims that he is now facing 20 years behind bars and I hope today’s sentencing sends a message that we will take action and catch those responsible for such horrific acts.”
