Harry Waugh charged towards officers and was caught hitting another man in Middlesbrough

A thug who hurled missiles at police in Middlesbrough during the summer riots has been jailed.

Stockton’s Harry Waugh was caught on numerous CCTV footages taking part in the disorder that occurred in the summer across the UK. The 26-year-old can be seen charging towards a line of officers, shouting abuse, pointing aggressively and throwing items at them while they tried to protect themselves with a shield.

He then walked away after a rock thrown by another individual involved in the disorder hit him in the face before returning to shout further abuse at police. Waugh was then captured hitting another man when a fight broke out at a nearby park.

Following information provided to the Operation Acorn investigation team, Waugh, of Plumer Drive in Stockton, was arrested and subsequently charged in connection with violent disorder.

He appeared at Teesside Crown Court on Wednesday, December 18 Waugh and was jailed for 30 months.

Teesside Crown Court heard Jamie Govan ‘had fallen victim to malign influences online’

A rioter who screamed and swore at a line of riot police and ignored their repeated demands for him to move away has been jailed.

Jamie Govan, 26, was caught on police bodycam footage shouting at the police on Linthorpe Road during the Middlesbrough riots: “You’re protecting them whilst they rape little kids.” Govan told his barrister he went to the riots on August 4 because he was “unhappy about people arriving in our country on small boats.”

Teesside Crown Court has heard that Govan hid his face with a balaclava, but was easily identifiable because of the distinctive yellow and black top he wore, as he approached a line of police who were blocking protestors from spreading onto Clarendon Road.

Govan, of Hartington Road in Stockton, pleaded guilty to violent disorder, before he was due to stand trial. He has no previous convictions.

On Monday afternoon, Govan’s barrister Matthew Moore-Taylor said that he had attended the protest “…through naivety; he had fallen victim to malign influences online. He was subject to misinformation about those who arrive on small boats. The only way he could express his opinions was to attend that march.”

Govan was captured swearing at the police and struggling with officers as they arrested him. Mr Moore-Taylor said that Govan’s attendence at the Middlesbrough riots was “politically motivated- not racially motivated.”

Govan’s barrister said that inmates at Durham prison chant “EDL” at him and that he has been “tarred as a racist.” The court heard that Govan is now trying to address his drinking and that he is in a “fragile mental state” whilst he is being held on remand.

Judge Laird told Govan that he accepted that, “you were not racially motivated, that your attendance was prompted by an ideological objection to illegal migration.”

Handing Govan an 18-month prison sentence, the judge told said: “You were aggressive, but you did not strike anyone or throw missiles. You repeatedly approached police lines and shouted and swore.

“You were repeatedly told to move back. Your behaviour was so aggressive you were arrested, and you struggled violently.” Govan will serve 40% of his sentence, before he is released on licence.

TWO friends who terrified a woman in her home as they angrily went in search of her new lover were locked up today.

The victim’s former boyfriend, Mark Trippett, was jailed for two years, and her cousin, Gary Skerritt, received 12 months.

Both men admitted affray in the early hours of November 26 last year, and Trippett also pleaded guilty to common assault.

Teesside Crown Court heard how the pals forced their way into frightened Donna McKie’s home in Stockton at 1.30am.

They were said to have been looking for Miss McKie’s new partner, and shouted threats at her, prosecutor Oliver Thorne said.

Trippett, 28, followed the householder outside when she tried to leave, and grabbed her after pushing her against a wall.

Skerritt, 24, grabbed Miss McKie’s mobile telephone and smashed it when she tried to call the police, Mr Thorne told the court.

The court heard that Skerritt has previous convictions for dishonesty, drugs, motor vehicle offences and disorderly behaviour.

He was the subject of two separate conditional discharges for damaging property at the time of the offence against his cousin.

Nigel Soppitt, mitigating, said Skerritt was often used as “the referee” in disputes between his friend and Miss McKie.

“He became involved time after time after time in their feuds,” said Mr Soppitt. “He was asked to go along on this particular occasion to play referee.”

Paul Abrahams, for Trippett, said he now realises the fear he caused his ex, and is sorry, although she was never his intended target.

“He knows he behaved in a wholly inappropriate way towards her,” said Mr Abrahams. “He seems to have realised the distress it was causing, and left.”

The court heard that Trippett was in breach of a suspended prison sentence from July last year for burglary when he caused the affray.

Trippett and Skerritt, both of Campbell Court, Stockton, will have the time they have spent on remand since their arrest taken from their sentences.

Skerritt told Judge Brian Forster, QC, in a letter that he hopes to settle with his partner on Tyneside and get a cleaning job with his father.
